There are four types of digital computer:

a). Micro computers;

b). Mini computers;

c). Main frame computers;

d). Super computers;

Micro computer:

In which the various integrated circuits and elements of a computer are replaced by single integrated circuit called a “chip”. Examples are the IBM pc, Apple Macintoshes, Dell.

Their continuing and rapid technology development had a major effect on the whole computer industry over the past twenty century.

Mini computers:

Physically small computers compared with mainframes. They are used for special purpose or smaller scale general purpose work. Example are DEC’S, VAX, RANGE.

Mainframes computers:

Large general purpose computes with extensive processing, storage and input/ output capabilities. The market for these computers is dominated by IBM.

Super computers:

A large and very powerful mainframe computer is called a supercomputer. The Cray X-MP is an example of supercomputer. Such supercomputers are applied to the solution of very complex and sophisticated scientific problem and for national security purposes of some advance nations.

There are five generation of computers. The described of different generation of computers are given bellow:-

First generation (1942-1955):

· Big in size and heat generated;

· Making in value and vacuum tube;

· Small memory;

· Use magnetic drum;

· Program execute by coding;

· Costly in use of power , troubleshoot and maintence.

Second generation (1955-1964):

· Circuit board used to making the modular design;

· More reliable and maximum capacity;

· Used transistor;

· Magnetic core used to make memory;

· Uses different high level language.

Third generation (1964-1975):

· Uses magnetic tape, Hard disk memory;

· Uses V.D.U and printer;

· More integrated circuits;

· More reliable and effective in processing;

· Uses package programming;

· Development of operating systems.

Fourth generation (19751989):

· Uses of LSI and VLSI chip;

· Very small in size;

· Uses big memory capacity;

· High speed processor;

· Developed software;

· Using telecommunications;

Types of computer:

Generally computer is classified by by purpose, use or age of technology. There are types three of computer. Such as

(a)  Digital;

(b)  Analog;

(c)  Hybrid.

Digital computer:

Digital computer process data that is presented in the forms of discrete values (eg 0, 1, 2, 3,-------) by operating on it in steps. Discrete vales occur at each step in the operation. Counting one’s fingers is probably the simplest digital operation.

Analog computer:

To measuring instruments such as thermometers and voltmeters with pointers on circular dials. They process data in the forms of electrical voltages. The output form of analog computers is often in the form of smooth graphs from which information can be read.

Hybrid computer:

This computer is made by the combined feather of digital and analog computers.
